Personality: On the surface, Hisoka is serious and cold. He is quick to get offended by Tsuzuki's jokes and flusters easily. He is critical to the point of being harsh, and disrespectful to authority. He is blunt and straightforward. These aspects of his personality, however, are the only things holding him together. Hisoka has been hurt repeatedly by people he cares about from a very young age, so he closed himself off to others in order to protect himself. He has a very difficult time opening up to and trusting people, and didn't have any real notion of family until he came to work at Juuouchou (after his death). Hisoka is also very much a 16-year-old boy, in that he is moody, independent, and easily annoyed. And he will be sixteen for all eternity, so that makes him grumpy. He prefers to sit by himself and read quietly, but if that quiet is disturbed, he will retaliate. He is an empath, and so can read others' emotions, though often they overwhelm him, making him wish he didn't have the gift in the first place. Being an empath does not mean Hisoka is good at talking about his emotions, however (because he really... really isn't), so he leaves a lot unsaid.

Canonical History: Hisoka grew up in a very prestigious family and was set to be the heir to the family name. His parents found out about his empathy, however, and locked him in the basement whenever it manifested. As he grew, Hisoka trained in traditional martial arts, though he realized his father was only molding him as a puppet to carry on the family line, and not seeing him as a human being.

One night when he was thirteen, Hisoka was unable to sleep and went for a moonlit walk. He accidentally witnessed a murder beneath the cherry trees; the murderer was Dr. Muraki, who caught Hisoka, raped him, and cursed him to waste away until death. Muraki then stole Hisoka's memories of that night. Hisoka spent the next three years in a hospital, slowly fading away until his death at sixteen.

Hisoka figured out that he had been murdered, and became a shinigami in order to learn the truth about his death. He was partnered with Tsuzuki, who he clashed with immediately. In their first case, they met Dr. Muraki, who revealed the circumstances of Hisoka's death. Hisoka's curse appears as calligraphic red lines on his body, after an encounter with Muraki or a nightmare about the night under the cherry trees. Hisoka decided to remain a shinigami in order to get enough power to finally get revenge on Muraki. He also began developing a deep friendship (possibly more) with his partner, Tsuzuki, who has been both Hisoka's protector and someone Hisoka protects.
